Nick van der Walt
Chief Executive Officer
Nick Van Der Walt is co-founder of Insight Medical Systems and serves in the positions of President and CEO. Prior to founding Insight Medical, he served as Vice President of Engineering at OrthAlign where he was the technical founder. Throughout his tenure, he developed and successfully launched award winning handheld computer assisted surgery devices which have established the category of smart tools in orthopedics, and helped to grow the company to a market leading position. Prior to joining OrthAlign, he was the founder and Chief Executive Officer of a start-up venture based in South Africa. He has over 20 years’ experience in the startup world and has helped build several successful ventures and bring multiple innovative products to market. He holds 19 patents in a variety of fields. Nick received a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.
Chief Technical Officer
Prior to co-founding Insight Medical Systems, Matt was actively involved in commercial navigation and augmented reality development as a technical lead for companies including Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media. His work included blending optical tracking, inertial measurement and user gestures into an augmented reality experience. Previously, Matt worked in a startup environment in orthopedics, and developed knee and hip replacement algorithms for OrthAlign. He currently holds four patents in orthopedic application of inertial technology, and has two pending patents, one in augmented reality application of optical tracking to a handheld object, and another for augmented reality application to knee, hip and spine surgical applications. Matt holds a Master’s Degree in engineering from Purdue University, along with a Master’s in Business Administration.
Vice President of Research & Development
Jonathan Nielsen brings over 15 years’ experience in orthopedics to his role as Vice President of R&D at Insight Medical Systems. In previous positions with Smith & Nephew, LifeModeler, and OrthAlign, he focused on introducing new technology to address the needs of both surgeons and patients. He has been awarded several patents for various orthopedic technologies spanning implant design, surgical navigation, and surgical simulation. His previous work includes research and development activities based on optical, inertial, and electromagnetic navigation modalities, and his work in navigation and surgical simulation has been published in industry journals. Jonathan received a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Iowa.
Andrew Hartman, M.D.
Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Andrew Hartman specializes in surgery of the shoulder, elbow and hand. In addition to completing his orthopedic surgery residency, he has also completed an additional year of fellowship training in upper extremity surgery at the University of California at San Diego. Dr. Hartman ensures he is utilizing the most innovative and effective treatments in patient care. He believes the combination of surgical expertise and mastery of state of the art techniques is essential to optimal patient outcomes and improving quality of life. In addition to his role at Insight Medical, Dr. Hartman is an active consultant for a leading orthopedic company.
